Safety Guidance
PREVENTION – ALL CLASSES
Each participant in swimming or strength & conditioning sessions is individually accountable and responsible for themselves and their own actions. This includes providing correct information on medical conditions, medication required and disclosing disabilities that could compromise their safety and that of other participants in the class or in the pool.
SWIMMING CLASS SAFETY PROCEDURES:
EMERGENCY
Whilst all steps are taken to ensure the safety of all participants and the coach, emergency situations can occur. In an emergency:
- The lifeguard should be called upon immediately
- Participants in the water will remain still until directed to exit the pool by either the coach or lifeguard.
- The coach will follow direction from the lifeguard team
- Participants will follow the direction of the coach.
HEART ATTACK
Fit and healthy people can still have heart attacks. Most heart attacks will give the person time to exit the pool and alert the coach/lifeguard however some can be sudden and severe. Most people with heart attacks have sudden onset of chest pain, usually described as feeling like there is pressure on the chest. If you experience this situation adopt the recognised emergency position of floating on one’s back and raising an arm to attract the attention of the coach and lifeguard.
ANAPHYLAXIS
If a participant carries their own supply of adrenaline, it is their individual responsibility to ensure they have this with them at all times and let the coach/lifeguard know if they are prone to it and where they carry their adrenaline.
ASTHMA
Most asthmatics will not be exercising if they feel they are having an asthma attack. Occasionally asthma attacks can become severe. In this situation the emergency position should be adopted if possible. Safe exit from the water and immediate assistance from lifeguard is required.
